Top 10 Point Guard Tips


·         PG’s Must Be Able to Penetrate & Finish Shot Around the Basket
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Push The Ball FT to FT & Pull Up (if needed)
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Handle Pressure with Poise & Manage the Clock
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Make Solid Post Entry Passes while being Pressured
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Handle Backcourt Pressure While Bringing the Ball Up the Court
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Read & React to How the Defender is Guarding Him and/or Her
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Attack the Basket w/ Toughness & Draw Fouls (anytime)
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Communicate While Remaining Under Control
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Make Wide Open Shots As Well As Shoot Off Screens
·         PG’s Must Be Able to Make Free Throws

Additional Tips:
1 -       PG’s must be able to cut off a defender during a fast break by getting his and/or her body in front of the defender
     -      PG’s must be able to set up a pick & roll or pick & pop with any player
3.       PG’s must know their personnel & what their capabilities are
4.       PG’s must know how to speed up the game and/or slow it down
5.       PG’s must be a talker and a motivator
6.       PG’s must stop the ball during fast break opportunities
7.       PG’s must be able to see the court while being heavily defended and make good decisions without turning the ball over
8.       PG’s must keep their head, don’t get rattled easily
9.       PG’s must always know how much time is left on the clock (clock management)

1.      PG’s must maintain a healthy contagious attitude at all times
